I found Herons differentiation between imagery based on pure sensation and visual encounter on the one hand and the depiction of symbols and concepts on the other hand (which Heron claimed to abhor)to be very interesting. I shared Herons love of beaches and began to find his visual cues everywhere I looked.I then came to understand Matisses's contention that a painter with a'real' feeling for nature could invent signs that which would act as'equivalents' for both artist and viewer.
